Mississippi State Names Zach Arnett as Interim Head Football Coach
Former Bulldog Defensive Coordinator Takes Over After Season-Ending Announcement
A Season of Transition
Mississippi State University (MSU) has announced the appointment of Zach Arnett as its interim head football coach, effective immediately. The decision comes after the university's decision to relieve previous head coach Mike Leach of his duties.Arnett, 35, has served as MSU's defensive coordinator since 2018 and has been instrumental in the Bulldogs' success on that side of the ball. A proven leader with a deep understanding of the program, Arnett now faces the challenge of guiding the team through a period of transition.
A Record of Success
Prior to his tenure at MSU, Arnett served as head coach at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) from 2014-2017. During his time at EMCC, he compiled a 40-10 record and led the Lions to two Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) Championships.
Arnett's defensive units have consistently ranked among the best in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In 2022, the Bulldogs finished the regular season ranked 12th nationally in total defense and 14th in scoring defense.
Long-Term Vision
MSU Director of Athletics John Cohen expressed confidence in Arnett's ability to lead the program forward. "Zach is a rising star in the coaching profession," Cohen said. "His passion for Mississippi State and his proven track record of success make him the ideal person to guide our football program through this transition."
While the university conducts a thorough search for Leach's permanent successor, Arnett will focus on preparing the Bulldogs for the upcoming season. Spring practice is scheduled to begin in March.
